FWCS Career Academy History

The FWCS Career Academy at Anthis is named for Bill C. Anthis, who was superintendent of Fort Wayne Community Schools from 1980-1990. He began his education career as a teacher and coach in Rockville, Ind., after serving in the U.S. Navy. When he came to FWCS, he spent the majority of his years at North Side High School, serving as guidance director, dean of boys, assistant principal and eventually principal. In total, he spent 33 years with the district.

The school was built in 1902 as Fort Wayne High and Manual Training School and later renamed Central High School. The much-loved high school closed in 1971, and the building became the Fort Wayne Regional Vocational High School. It was renamed Anthis Career Center in 1990 and named the FWCS Career Academy at Anthis in 2015.

The mission of the FWCS Career Academy is to provide students with both academic and technical skills to be both college and career ready. Students are accepted from schools throughout Northeast Indiana, whether they attend a public or private school or are homeschooled.

Application for programs held at the FWCS Career Academy is made through the home school counselors. Generally all programs are available to qualified Juniors and Seniors, with some exception made for Sophomores.

In both the Fall and Spring Semesters 3 credits can be earned for a total of 6 per year. In addition, all programs offer dual college credits and industry recognized certifications.

Both Fire Science and Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice are located at the Public Safety Academy at the Southtown Centre. The Precision Machine program is located at Ivy Tech North, with the Aviation program located at Smith Field.

Since all classes are of the upper high school or college level, both a good math background and reading level will help for success. Class space is limited to high school students. Many programs require industry uniforms and shoes.
