STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

FWCS Career Academy Chapter of the National Technical Honor Society

The National Technical Honor Society was founded in 1984 to reward excellence in career and technical education. Locally, the FWCS Career Academy staff recognized a need to encourage and reward outstanding student achievement in workforce education and pursued the establishment of an Honor Society Chapter.

Our charter group was inducted April 21, 1999. The FWCS Career Academy Induction and Recognition Ceremony in early May each year. Approximately 100 students are recognized yearly.

Only those students who are recommended by faculty and exhibit the qualities of skilled workmanship, honesty, responsibility, leadership, citizenship and scholastic achievement are selected for membership. Additional criteria for membership in the FWCS Career Academy chapter of the Society are:

• A cumulative grade point average of a "B" or higher
• A grade point average of a "B+" or higher in their career program
• Instructor recommendation
• Four or fewer absences during the Fall semester
• Membership in a Career & Technical Education Service Organization such as SkillsUSA, HOSA, and FCCLA.
• Community service
• A letter of recommendation from a 2nd teacher or employer

The NTHS is an internationally recognized and proven program with over 2,000 member high schools and colleges. It is the highest secondary educational scholastic honor awarded for excellence in workforce education in America, and represents the top five percent of students enrolled in career and technical education. This honor identifies members among the top performing students in our nation.

FWCS Career Academy NTHS members assist with service work at FWCS Career Academy and the AM & PM presidents have participated beyond the classroom and job site in numerous ways via community service projects, FWCS Career Academy service work, and serving as FWCS Career Academy representatives on Superintendent Dr. Robinson’s Student Advisory Band.

In addition to recognizing students during the annual ceremony, honorary memberships are awarded by the local chapter to individuals or businesses making a significant contribution to the school or local chapter

HOSA

What is HOSA?

HOSA (HOSA) is a national student organization endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Technology Education Division of ACTE. HOSA’s two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people. HOSA’s goal is to encourage all health occupations instructors and students to join and be actively involved in the HSTE-HOSA Partnership.

HOSA provides a unique program of leadership development, motivation, and recognition exclusively for secondary, post secondary, adult, and collegiate students enrolled in HSTE programs. HOSA is 100% health care!

HOSA’s Purpose

The primary purpose of HOSA is to serve the needs of it’s members and strengthen the HSTE-HOSA Partnership in the following ways:

1. Foster programs and activities that will develop
1. Physical, mental, and social well-being of the individual
2. Leadership, character, and citizenship
3. Ethical practices and respect for the dignity of work
2. Foster self-actualization of each member which contributes to meeting the individual’s psychological, social and economic needs.
3. Build the confidence of students in themselves and their work by providing opportunities to assume responsibilities and by developing personal and occupational competencies and social skills that lead to realistic choices of careers and successful employment in the health care field.
4. Promote inter-organizational relationships with professional groups, businesses, industries and other organizations.
5. Recognize individual achievement in scholarship, occupational skills or services rendered, by providing recognition and awards.
6. Promote involvement in current health care issues, environmental concerns and survival needs of the community, the nation and the world.
7. Establish and maintain state associations in good standing with HOSA.

 

SkillsUSA

What is SkillsUSA?

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives, working together to ensure America has a skilled work force. It helps each student excel.

SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations. It was formerly known as VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America).

SkillsUSA Creed

I believe in the dignity of work
I hold that society has advanced to its present culture through the use of the worker’s hands and mind.
I will maintain a feeling of humbleness for the knowledge and skills that I receive from professionals, and I will conduct myself with dignity in the work I do.

I know our culture is the result of freedom of action and opportunities won by the founders of our American republic, and I will uphold their ideals.

I believe in education
I will endeavor to make the best use of knowledge, skills and experience that I will learn in order that I may be a better worker in my chosen occupation and a better citizen in my community. To this end, I will continue my learning now and in the future.

I will, through honesty and fair play, respect the rights of others. I will always conduct myself in the manner of the best professionals in my occupation and treat those with whom I work as I would like to be treated.

I believe satisfaction is achieved by good work
I feel that compensation and personal satisfaction received for my work and services will be in proportion to my creative and productive ability.

I believe in high moral and spiritual standards
I will endeavor to conduct myself in such a manner as to set an example for others by living a wholesome life and by fulfilling my responsibilities as a citizen of my community.
